NAZI GERMANY
OTHER POSTCARDS
1937

line
The 1937 postcard page has now been split into four separate pages as it was beginning to get unwieldy. All 1937 Official postcards are now on this page. Official postcards are cards that were issued by the Reich's post office, had pre-printed (indicia) stamps and were widely available throughout German towns and cities.

Secondly Printed to Private Order postcards are postcards that were generally issued by entities that were advertising an event or commemorating an anniversary, and also had pre-printed stamps, but were not widely available throughout Germany (most were only available at the event they were commemorating).

Thirdly Other postcards are postcards that fall into the same general category as printed to private order however they do not have pre-printed stamps.

Finally, Miscellaneous postcards is where you will find postcards that do not fit into the first three categories (i.e. they are not official, they do not have pre-printed stamps, and they do not commemorate an event).

DAY OF GERMAN ART
(16th/18th Jul 1938)

Official postcard issued to commemorate the 'Day of German Art' Exhibition held in Munich from 16th to 18th Jul 1937. This postcard was published by Photo-Hoffmann.

The 'House of German Art' was designed by the architect Paul Ludwig Troost who had been asked by Hitler to construct a ‘House of German Art’ in Munich. The building replaced the Glaspalast which had burned down in 1931. It opened 18th Jul 1937 to much pomp and ceremony and there was a total of eight 'Day of German Art' exhibitions, held annually until line . The image on the postcard below was used each year to advertise the show and is a representation of Pallas Athena, the Greek goddess of War and Art.

Heinrich Hoffmann, Hitler's photographer and a prolific publisher of postcards featuring Hitler, is known to have used the exhibition to provide material for a huge number of postcards. The exact number produced is unknown, but it is estimated to be in excess of 1,000 cards. Each Hoffmann Studio postcard features a HDK Number, the artist's name and the title of the artistic work on the back of the card.
