DANZIG STAMP
'Deutsches Reich' OVERPRINT

On the 28th September, following the occupation of Danzig by German forces the 14 exisiting 'Free City of Danzig' stamps were overprinted with the words 'Deutsches Reich' and a new value in Reich's Pfenning or Reichsmarks was added. These stamps were produced in sheets of 100 for the RPf values and sheets of 50 for the RM values and all were valid until 31st December 1940. There were 3 postcards that are associated with this issue.

Michel 716 through 729 were only valid in the area that had formerly been the Free City of Danzig until 20th Oct 1939, thereafter they were valid through out Germany.

Michel 716 through 729 can also be found with a special marking 'DANZIG / DER FÜHRER HAT UNS BEFREIT / 1. Sept 39' or 'DANZIG GRÜSST JUBELND / SEINEN FÜHRER UND BEFREIER / ADOLF HITLER / 19. Sept. 1939' (although they were only valid after 28th Sep 1939). The first mark was only used for 3 months without the date changing.
