My 41st GERMAN STAMP DAY
(16th-19th Aug 1935)

line

The 41st German Stamp Day was held in the cities of MAINZ, in the Rhineland region and WIESBADEN in neighbouring Hesse. This postcard features a postman blowing his post horn to signal the arrival of the mail and the words 'MAINZ' and 'WIESBADEN' emanating from the horn. In his right hand is a banner. The image on the banner consists of two wheels connected by a bar forming a cross, this is the coat of arms of MAINZ.

The building on the left, behind the postman is most likely the Market Church in Wiesbaden, built by Carl Boos between 1853 and 1862 as the Nassau Regional Cathedral. The building on the right is also in Wiesbaden and is the 'Kurhaus Wiesbaden' built in 1907 by Fridrich von Thiersch.

This postcard, published by Gutenberg-Druckerei of Mainz, was issued to commemorate the 41st German Stamp Day in 1935. There are at least three versions of this card available, the difference being the value of the pre-printed stamp and the use of the word 'Drucksache' or 'postkarte'. The first, PP122-C-9 has a 3Pf Hindenburg Medallion pre-printed stamp and the word 'Drucksache'. The second, PP126-C-5, has a 5Pf Hindenburg Medallion ond the word 'Postkarte' and the third, PP127-C-10, has a 6Pf Hindenburg Medallion and the word 'Postkarte'.

There was also a special cancel used inscribed "MAINZ | 41.Philatelistentag 12 Bundestag 16-19 Aug 35." used in MAINZ and a second cancel inscribed "WIESBADEN | Briefmarken A Ausstellung | 17-19 August 1935" used in the city of WIESBADEN.
