NAZI GERMANY
FESTIVAL of LAUSITZ
(26th/30th May 1935)
This postcard was issued to commemorate the Festival of Lausitz in Bautzen held from 26th to 30th May 1935. Bautzen is a city in Eastern Germany on the banks of the River Spree. The figure depicted on the card is Heinrich I (Duke of Saxony) and celebrates his ride through the area in 932. In his right hand is a small banner with the early version of the Coat of Arms of Bautzen.
On a darker note the city was used to imprison many Nazi political opponents including Communists, Socialists and others. Ernst Thalmann was one such prisoner until his deportation to Buchenwald in 1943. The city was heavily damaged by Allied bombing in the closing months of the Second World War.
There was no special cancel used to commemorate the festival.
