Michel 578
"Birth Centenary of King Carol I"

Issued 10th Apr 1939. This stamp measures 28.5 x 33.5mm and was printed photogravure on watermarked 7 paper, perf K13¾:13½. This stamp features King Carl I on Horseback at the battle of Plevna.

The Siege of Plevna, or Siege of Pleven, was a major battle of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, fought by the joint army of Russia and Romania against the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman defense held up the main Russian advance southwards into Bulgaria for five months, encouraging other great powers to join the Ottoman cause. Eventually, superior Russian and Romanian numbers forced the garrison to capitulate. The Russian-Romanian victory on 10th Dec 1877 was decisive for the outcome of the war and the Liberation of Bulgaria.

King Carol I (20th Apr 1839 – 10th Oct 1914) was born Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and was the King of Romania from 1866 to 1914.
