AIRMAIL
(Graf Zeppelin)
These 3 elegant stamps feature the airship LZ-127 more commonly known as the 'Graf Zeppelin' named after Germany's most famous airship designer Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. The 'Graf Zeppelin' was the most successful airship ever built. Between its first flight in 1928 and retirement in 1937, it made 590 flights and covered over a million miles.
The 2 Mark (Mi 423) and the 4 Mark (Mi 424) stamps were issued on 20th September 1928. The 1 Mark (Mi 455) was issued later in May 1931. These stamps are engraved and were issued on sheets (5x10) on coated paper, with a Waffle (network) Watermark. Mi 424 exists with both a horizontal watermark and a vertical watermark. Perf K 14.
