MICHEL P190
OFFICIAL POSTCARD
8Rpf

Issued 1931. Commemorative postcard for the 10th anniversary of the referendum in Upper Silesia on 20th Mar 1921. Left with multi-colored coat of arms in an oval frame with inscription. The inscription on the card indicates the vote was on 22nd Mar 1921, however it actually took place on 20th Mar 1921.

The Upper Silesian Plebiscite was one of several votes to determine the future state of a number of regions that had belonged to Germany before the First World War, but following Germany's defeat, were now allowed to determine their own fate. Upper Silesia is a predominantly industrial region on the German, and newly created, Polish border. The region had a 60/40 mix of Polish and Germans and after outbreaks of violence before the vote, a border was eventually agreed upon. The vote took place on 20th Mar 1921 and Upper Silesia was eventually divided up, to a large extent, along ethnic lines.
