In May 1923 Canada began issuing official stamps for use by the Receiver General's department in Ottowa and by the Assistant Receiver General's Office in the Provincial cities, these were regular stamps perforated "O.H.M.S". From 1 July 1939 all departments of the federal government began using these stamps until 1949.
The perforation can appear in several ways, either upright, inverted or sideways. There are many known examples of forged stamps where the 'O.H.M.S' was applied to used stamps. Genuine examples can be detected by signs of the cancellation ink leeking into the perforation holes.
