The coronation of George VI and his wife Elizabeth as king and queen of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on 12 May 1937. George VI ascended the throne upon the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII, on 11 December 1936, three days before his 41st birthday. Edward's coronation had been planned for 12 May 1937 and it was decided to continue with his brother and sister-in-law's coronation on the same date.

Most of the countries and territories of the British Empire celebrated the event with the omnibus issue featured below. A total of 202 stamps were issued to commemorate the event.

The most common design features both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, between them is The Imperial State Crown, The Sovereign's Sceptres and the Sovereign's Orb. Another Sovereign's sceptre is to the left of Queen Elizabeth and The Sword of State is to King George's right (as viewed from the front of the stamp).

GREAT BRITAIN

Issued: 13th May 1937 to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Designed by E. Dulac, printed on 'Multiple GVIR' watermarked paper W127 and perf 15:14. The stamp measures 41 x 23mm. Unlike other countries and territiories of the Empire, Great Britaain only issued a single stamp to celebrate the event and this stamp was also used in Morocco, overprinted 'MOROCCO AGENCIES' or 'TANGIER'.
