Hungary Stamps
1941
Michel 674
"St Martin's Cathedral, Bratislava"
Issued: 1942 to celebrate the Church in Hungary. This stamp was printed photogravure on watermarked 10 paper, perf 12½:12. The design is very similar to Michel 607 issued in 1939 and Michel 721 in 1943 but the later issue is on watermark 10 paper and is perf 12½ x 12.
This stamp features St Martin's Cathedral, Bratislava (Hungarian: Szent Márton-dóm or Koronázó templom). It is situated at the western border of the historical city center below Bratislava Castle. It is the largest and one of the oldest churches in Bratislava, known especially for being the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary between 1563 and 1830.
Together with the castle on the adjacent hill, and somewhat similar in its design, St Martin's dominates Old Town's skyline. The tower formed a part of the town's fortifications, built as it was into the city's defensive walls.
