"King Carol II"
Issued 8th Jun 1940. This stamp measures 29 x 33mm, was printed photogravure on watermarked 7 paper and is perf 14½:13½. This series of stamps was issued to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of King Carol II's coronation. Carol II (15th Oct 1893 to 4th Apr 1953) reigned as King of Romania from 8th Jun 1930 until his abdication on 6th Sep 1940.
His personal life was filled with controversy due to numerous scandals and affairs. His reign was marked by re-alignment with Nazi Germany, adoption of anti-semitic laws and ultimately evolved into a personal dictatorship beginning in 1938. On 6th Sep 1940, he was forced by his Prime Minister Ion Antonescu to leave the country and withdraw abroad into exile. He was succeeded by his son Michael.
