17th Jun 1970: SG829 to SG831 - "High Value Decimal Issue"

These were Britain's first decimal stamps and were issued to start the change to decimalisation. 'D-Day' as it was called was on 15th Feb 1971 and these stamps were issued early to ease the pressure on the stamp printers and distributors who would be overloaded with new issues early in 1971. This First Day Cover was designed by Stuart Rose.

From My Collection

Official Exhibition First Day over with local cancel "FIRST DAY OF ISSUE HASTINGS SUSSEX - 18 SEP 70". This cancel is interesting in that the 'year' on the date stamp was missing and was hand entered as '70'. The way the number '7' is written was not common in the UK in the '70's but was widely used in other European countries.

line

25th Nov 1970: SG838 to SG840 - "Christmas"

These stamps were created from illustrations from the De Lisle Psalter which forms part of the Arundel Collection in the British Museum. This cover was designed by J. Sutherland-Hawes and is also derived from the De Lisle Psalter.
