This issues was intended to raise awareness of the the use of natural resources and the fact that the supply of energy is not unlimited. Since 1973 oil prices has increased 5 fold and Britain was only able to absorb this shocking increae in fuel prices due to its North Sea oil reserves. This commemorative issue features 4 historic royal palaces and castles and is issued to mark the 900th Anniversary of the oldest part of the Tower of London, the White Tower (possibly the most famous and well known part of the Tower of London).Special Post Office First Day of Issue "FIRST DAY OF ISSUE PHILATELIC BUREAU EDINBURGH - 1 MAR 78". This postmark shows the keep of the Tower of London.

The 4 stamps depict The Gold State Coach (9p), St. Edward's Crown (10½p), The Orb (11p) and The Imperial State Crown (13p). 1978 marked the centenary of both the Cyclists Touring Club and the British Cycling Federation formed in 1878.
