16th Jan 1980: SG1109 to SG1112 - "Centenary of Wild Bird Protection Act"
The four species of birds illustrated on this cover, the Kingfisher, the Dipper, the Yellow Wagtail and the Moorhen, all depend on wetlands for their survival. The first Wild Birds Protection Act in Britain was passed into law in 1880 and over the years more legislation has been enacted to protect more and more species of birds. Even with the advent of laws protecting these birds their survival is still in danger as their natural habitats, the wetlands, have steadily disappeared throughout Britain.This first day cover was designed by Sutherland Hawes & Associates .
