6th Feb 1981: SG1143 to SG 1146. "Folklore"

The first known use of the word "Folklore" was 1846 by the British antiquary J.W. Thoms. Today the meaning cover such topics as fairy tales, susperstitions and traditional customs. The stamps on this first day cover represent different British customs.

The logo for the Year issued by the United Nations symbolises a disabled and an able-bodied person holding hands in mutual support surrounded by the UN laurel leaves.

This First Day Cover was designed by Douglas Haliday, a freelance designer, Vice-Chancellor and Head of the School of Graphic Design at the Newport College of Art and Design, Gwent. The interlaced motif is based on medieval stone carvings found at various locations around Wales.

Founded in 1895 the National Trust for Places of Historical Interest or Natural Beauty seeks to ensure that the heritage of historical buildings and natural features of England, Wales and Northern Ireland is preserved for present and future enjoyment. The national Trust is an independent charity relying on donations.

The First Day Cover was designed by Design Alliance and the insert card written by Suzanne Wolstenholme.

The Duke of Edingburgh's Award Scheme was set up in 1956 as an experimental project, twenty five years later and 1.5 million youngster from Britain , the Commonwealth and beyond have participated in the various activities.
