Urban renewal operates within the exiting structure of cities to alter their unique characters. It revives areas of dereliction for example in Liverpool the International Garden Festival will convert wasteland into public parks and provide economic regeneration. In Bristol the run down docklands are being rennovated to provide a new inner city leisure area. In durham a new shopping centre has been constructed to match the town's medieval surroundings and in Perth new housing projects will reflect the tradition of Scottish housing.

23rd Oct 1984: "Regional Definitive - Northern Ireland"

The Red Right Hand of Ulster is recognised as a symbol of Northern Ireland and dates from ancient times. It was used on the early seals of the O'Neills, Kings of Ulster and it was from their family that Ulster took its emblem. The six-pointed white star represents the six counties of Northern Ireland: Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone.

Definitive stamps were first issued in Ireland in 1958 and since then four designs have been used and all have included the Hand of Ulster.
