100th ANNIV of BIRTH of
Prof. Dr. ROBERT KOCH

25th Jan 1944 - Dr Koch is renowned for his discovery of the anthrax bacillus and its eventual innoculation in 1883. He held the post of medical officer at Wollstein near Bomst in Posen in 1876. He later became Professor of Medicine at Berlin University and paved the way for a vaccine against tuberculosis. He was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1905 and died in Baden-Baden in March 1910.

This special cancel was dated about a month after the stamp was made available and is inscribed "For the birthday of the conqueror of disease. Robert Koch". The cancel was only used in BERLIN and WOOLSTEIN.

10th ANNIV of the BROWN RIBBON RACE

This special cancel was used to comemmorate the 10th anniversary of the Braune Band Horserace which took place on 6th Aug 1944 . The special cancel was never officially used due to the cancellation of the race, post offices did use the handstamp to cancel CTO orders from dealers and collectors as if the event had actually taken place. Any postally used cancels were most likely applied after the war.

20th Dec 194 . This cancel is inscribed "STRIEGAU | 20.12.44 | Bauet mit Striegauer Granit" and has a special cancel inscribed and appears to celebrate STRIEGAU's role in the granite industry..

Granite plays a very special role in the town's economy due to the large number of granite quarries in the area.
