MY FRIEDRICH EBERT
THIRD SERIES
P189

The third Ebert series of postcards appeared in 1930 and are refered to as P189 in the Michel series. This series comprises a total of 61 different cards. Cards of the third Ebert series differ from the first and second series by (1) the picture of the scene is now a photograph rather than a line drawing and (2) the is a brief description of the scene beneath the photograph, other than that the cards look the same as series two. There is still no 'Lernt Deutschland Kennen!' title.

P189/54 generated quite a lot of controversy when it was issued. The card features the bridge over the river Saar in the capital Saarbrucken (the city's name means 'bridge over the river Saar'). The caption below the image states "Saarbrucken, die Deutsche Grenzstadt an der Saar" - 'Saarbrücken, the German border town on the Saar'. At the time the Saar was still under a League of Nations mandate, and was administered by the French who were none-to-pleased that Germany was claiming ownership. However the cards were not withdrawn, and there was little the French could do about it.
