Great Britain Covers & Postcards
1940
Cover to Brooklyn, USA
This cover was sent from Clacton on Sea, Essex, England to Brooklyn, USA on 6th May 1940, the first day of issue for the 'Queen Victoria & King George VI' issue. The 4 stamps are ½d, SG 479 and the total affixed to the envelope is 2d, not enough apparently for the charge to the US as there is a 'POSTAGE DUE, 2 CENTS' hand stamp on the front which the recipient would have had to pay upon receipt of the letter.
The hexagon stamp with the 'T | 10' inside and an 'L' below (for London) is another indication that not enough was paid to deliver the letter. I have not been able to identify the two other stamps (the 'PL in an oval' or 'The Maltese Crosses'.
Also of note is the mispelled address 'Brookine' instead of Brooklyn.
