Kiauchau was a German leased territory in China from 6th Mar 1900 with the German post beginning 26th Jan 1900. The Bay of Kiauchau is located to the southeast of Beijing (then Peking) on the south coast of Shandong Province (then Shantung). The capital is present day Qingdao, formely named Tsintau (Tsingtau). In 1897 the Chinese government signed a 99 year lease agreement with the German government however the lease ended at the outset of the First World War on 7th Nov 1914.

Due to the inadequate amount of same type available at the Missionary Printing Plant, the half-sheet of 50 (10x5) had to be put together using different type styles. Nine different type styles appear, once each, on the half-sheet, in addition to the three main types (17 times for type I, 20 times for type II and 4 times for type III).
