German possession since 7th Aug 1884 with the Post Office starting on 16th July 1888.



German Southwest Africa, now the area occupied by Namibia, is located on the southwest coast of Africa. The postal network started in July 1888 and almost 100 post offices were created up until the First World War. German Southwest Africa was handed over to the South African Union on the 9th July 1915.

Issued: July 1897: Regular issue German Empire stamps. Michel 45 to 48 (so-called "crown/eagle") with black Typography overprint, country name in three words. "Deutsch Sudwest-Afrika".

In Feb 1897 Michel 1-4 and I-II were issued (800 each) for the U.P.U in Bern. This issue can be identified by a stronger overprint, the so-called "BERN Issue".
