At the beginning of the war the town of Schweinfurt produced most of Nazi Germany's ball bearings, and factories such as the Schweinfurter Kugellagerwerke (ballbearing factory) became a target of Allied strategic bombing during World War II in an attempt to cripple tank and aircraft production. Schweinfurt was bombed 22 times during Operation Pointblank by a total of 2,285 aircraft.

This cover was sent from Munich on 9th Nov 1943 and features a 1943 issue Michel 863 24+26Pf stamp. The cancellation is a special cancel inscribed 'MUNCHEN HAUPTSTADT DER BEWEGUNG' translated as 'Munich, home of the movement' which refers to the fact that the Nazi Party started life in Munich. 1943 was the 20th Anniversary of the Beer Hall Putsch when the Nazi's first attempted to gain power in Munich. The figure on the stamp is thought to be that of Horst Wessel and he is carrying what came to be known as the 'Blood Flag', a symbol of the lives lost in the failed putsch.
