BAHNPOST
PEKING-TAKU
The rail link from Tongku via Tientsin to Beijing was largely destroyed during the boxer rebellion. It was initially restored between Tongku and Yangtsun. From 15th Sep 1900 onwards, regular mail delivery from German railroad stations took place on this section. From Yangtsun to Beijing, the post was initially requested by the rider's registration officer and cart workers accompanied by soldiers, or by military transport boats on the Peiho. On 18th Dec 1900, traffic also started on the Yangtsun-Beijing route. The stamp shown below appears from 17 Oct 1900, which was probably made in the country. According to the way in which it was affixed to the postage due stamps, particularly on field telegrams, it apparently had the function of a security stamp against the theft of the high-quality stamps used in particular for field telegrams, rather than a cancellation stamp.
Stamps used as required usually do not fully show the impression of this stamp on the stamps, but only on the edge, sometimes only on one or a part of the stamps used for franking, while these are subsequently canceled in Tientsin or Beijing with the daily stamp or with the field postmark.
