On the front of the postcard the 10 characters in two column on the left (An) refer to the sender as the Kaumi post office). The three characters on the right (in) refer to the recipient who is also in the town of Kaumi. The two columns of 7 characters on the reverse are what is known as 'dui lian' which is a form of Chinese poetry which consists of 14 characters. Typically they would be written on the door frame of a building, one column on the left and the other on the right. The poem references Poinsettia flowers, trees and greenery.

MARINE SHIFFSPOST No.28

The posctcard below was cancelled on 7th Aug 1900 with The KAIS DEUTSCHE MARINE SHIFFSPOST No.28 cancel. At this time it was used on board the 'BATAVIA', a chartered civil ship to tranport troops to and from germany to TAKU in China in support of the supression of the Boxer Rebellion.

This postcard was cancelled aboard the ship on 7th Aug and arrived in Frankfurt, Germany on the 13th Aug 1900. The journey by sea would have taken far longer than a week so the SHIFFSPOST cancel was not applied on departure but during the voyage around a week before arrival.

The postcard also has the "S.B OSTAS. EXPED 2 INFANT-REGMT" cancel used during the Boxer campaign.

The posctcard below was cancelled on 4th Dec 1900 with The KAIS DEUTSCHE MARINE SHIFFSPOST No.28 cancel. This time however it was used on board the 'WITTEKIND', a chartered civil ship, operating as a hospital ship in support of the supression of the Boxer Rebellion.

The cancel was carried on board this ship from the 24th Aug 1900 until 30th Apr 1901 on a 'tour' of Asia, but was only used from the 10th Sep. It was docked in China from early Oct and performed a number of shuttle voyages between TAKU and KIAUTSCHOU before returning to Germany. According to the sender's address the ship also visited Nagasaki, Japan, during this tour. On the ship's return to Germany this postcard was cancelled 'FRANKFURT' but the date is illegible.

The postcard also has the "S.B OSTAS. EXPED FELD-POSTEXPED" cancel used during the Boxer campaign.

MARINE SHIFFSPOST No.34

The KAIS.DEUTSCHE MARINE SHIFFSPOST No.34 stamp was used by 'SMS Kurfürst Friedrich-Wilhelm' (Battleship) from 30th Jul 1900 to 9th Aug 1901. This postcard was cancelled aboard this ship on 24th Sep 1900. This is a British postcard, not of German origin, and the sender has crossed through the 'Postkarte' and 'Weltpostverein' and written Felfdpost. Due to the use of German script it is a little difficult to determine the destination but it appears to be to a Mr. Joseph Kloos in Hochst which is located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The postcard is somewhat battered but it is a nice example of a postcard from the start fo the Boxer Rebellion. Again it is difficult to read the script but the postcard looks to have been sent from Woosung, Shanghai.

MICHEL P14
'2 Cents 2 | China' Overprint

This used postcard is a Michel P14 from 1905 which features a single Germania 5Pf stamp overprinted '2 Cents 2 | China'. This particular postcard was sent from Tientsin on 20th Feb 1906 and was destined for Miss Brenda Rolf in Newcastle-on-Tyne in England. The original postcard has been uprated with an additional '2 cents on 5Pf' stamp. The message on the reverse simply says 'I think I can still get the former ½d postcard unstamped'. Perhaps Miss Rolf was a stamp collector.
