The Slovak part of Czechoslovakia declared itself independent on March 14, 1939 and immediately signed a guarantee with Germany guaranteeing Slovakian independence, in effect making Slovakia a "protectorate". With the occupation of the Slovakian territory by Soviet troops in the summer of 1944, the Czechoslovak administration was restored.

Issued 21st Mar to 1st Apr 1939. Czechoslovakian stamps from 1928 to 1939 overprinted 'Slovenský Štát 1939' in red or blue. Various perf, either 10, 12½ or 12x12½. Watermarked 'Double-Barred Cross'. High quality counterfeit overprints exist.
Michel 26 to 34 "Newspaper Stamps" Overprint '1939 / Slovensky štát'
Issued 1st Apr 1939. Printed on unwatermarked paper, imperforate. This set differs from later sets Michel 54X to 65X and Michel 55Y to 66Y as the inscription for this set is "Československa" overprinted '1939 / SLOVENSKY ŠTÁT' whereas the later two sets are inscribed 'SLOVENSKA POSTA'.
Issued 4th May 1939 to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the death of General Milan Štefánik. These stamps depict Štefánik with a view of his tomb in the background. These stamps measure 25x20mm and are perf 12½.
Issued 5th Aug 1939. Printed on unwatermarked paper on sheets (10 x 10). Perf L12½. Not to be confused with 1940/1941 issue Michel 13 to 23 which are the same design and value except the later issue is on watermarked paper.
