NAZI GERMANY
MISCELLANEOUS POSTCARDS
1935

line
The 1935 postcard page has now been split into four separate pages as it was beginning to get unwieldy. All 1935 Official postcards are now on this page. Official postcards are cards that were issued by the Reich’s post office, had pre-printed (indicia) stamps and were widely available throughout German towns and cities.

Secondly Printed to Private Order postcards are postcards that were generally issued by entities that were advertising an event or commemorating an anniversary, and also had pre-printed stamps, but were not widely available throughout Germany (most were only available at the event they were commemorating).

Thirdly Other postcards are postcards that fall into the same general category as printed to private order however they do not have pre-printed stamps.

Finally, Miscellaneous postcards is where you will find postcards that do not fit into the first three categories (i.e. they are not official, they do not have pre-printed stamps, and they do not commemorate an event).

POSTCARD from BERLIN
(7th Mar 1935)

This postcard was sent from BERLIN to HALLE(SALLE) on the 7th of Mar 1935. Apart from the regular CDS cancel at BERLIN C2, there is also a slogan postmark inscribed "Werdet | Mitglied | im | Reichsluftschutzbund" which was used from 30th Nov 1934 until 1940 in 11 places.

The Reichsluftschutzbund (RLB) was a Nazi organisation tasked with Air Raid protection duties in residential areas and small business units. It was formed on 29th Apr 1933 and operated until the end of the war in 1945. In 1939 the organisation had approximately 15 million members and trained civilians in such things as firefighting and preparation to minimise the damage from potential air raids. Reich’s minister for Aviation, Hermann Göering, was the head of the organisation.

The text on the reverse side of the card translates as "Dear sir! I confirm with my best thanks that I have received your annual subscription for the Berlin postal stationery collector association for 1934 with 9RM. With greetings from the collector Dr. Mar v. Bahrfeldt."

DER NÜRNBERGER TRICHTER
The Nürnberg Funnel
(15th Jul 1935)

This unusual postcard is entitled 'The Nuremberg funnel' and has the subtext 'He makes the heads bright'. The Nuremberg funnel was a device for pouring wisdom into the subject. In the case of this postcard there are two men pouring wisdom into a boy. The legend/fairy tale, call it what you will, dates back to 1545 when such a device was first described in the book "Deutsche Arithmetika" by Michael Stifels.

This card also has a special slogan cancel used in Nürnberg. There were two versions of this cancel, the one on this card is the 1935 version where the eagle with two wings is on the right and the other version, used from 1936 until line where the two-winged eagle is on the left. The eagle with two wings is from the German Empire coat of Arms and the eagle with one wing is from the Nürnberg Coat of Arms.
